Seven Principles of Coaching - Principle 6 - Address The whole Person

Seven Principles of Coaching

Principle 6 - Address The whole Person

Some coaches wrongly see their role as being confined to the work place and work-related issues.  However, the individual at work is not the whole person.  Personal life and issues often cross over to work and if the client opens up to these, a good coach will be receptive and understanding of them.

Seven Principles of Coaching

Principle 5 - Equality of Relationship

As coach, you do not have knowledge, power or status that the client does not possess.  The coach-client relationship is based on a colleague to colleague footing and will only work if there is mutual respect and understanding.

Seven Principles of Coaching

Principle 4 - Agenda

The client sets the coaching agenda.  There is no agenda as in mentoring, teaching or training.  You may have a mental model of ‘effective leadership’ or ‘managing a difficult colleague’ for example, but if this does not fit the client’s agenda it is of little value.

Seven Principles of Coaching - Principle 3 - Role of Coach

Seven Principles of Coaching

Principle 3 – Role of Coach

The role of the coach is to give oxygen to the clients’ own resourcefulness.  Not giving advice, the coach brings the best out of the client.  Advice implies you know best and can lead to the client being dependent on you which is the opposite of your goal as a coach.

Seven Principles of Coaching - Principle 2 - Client

Seven Principles of Coaching

Principle 2 – Client

The person being coached (client) is resourceful and knows more about themselves than anyone.  Only they can truly know what to do because only they know the whole story.  Only they can implement the actions agreed and live with the results.

Seven Principles of Coaching Principle 1

Principle 1 – Will and Permission

The person being coached (client) must have a will to be coached – it cannot be forced on an individual as it usually will require some change from them.  Equally, the coach should seek permission to coach the client.

The Grow Model for Coaching

The Grow Model of Coaching is familiar but often forgotten.  The beauty of this simple model is that it puts the onus on the client to arrive at their own solutions.  Although this model can be depicted as one starting with 'G' and working through 'R', 'O' and 'W'...... it is best visualised as an interactive, three dimensional model where the four stages are used when the timing and circumstances fit.

Solution Centred Coaching

Solution Centred Coaching is an immensely useful process when the client is driven and motivated to improve. As in all coaching this requires the 80:20 rule of Coaching - listen 80% of the time; speak only 20%.

Solution Centred Coaching that I adopt revolves around:

  • Working with the person (not the problem)
  • Looking for resources that the person has at their disposal
  • Exploring possible and preferred future scenarios
  • Remembering the client is the expert on their issue
  • Visualising where the client is on a scale
  • Moving up the scale towards the preferred solution

The Chinese have known the secret to coaching for two millenia

Chinese Poem, 23 BC

Go to the people

Learn from them

Love them

Start with what they know

Build on what they have

But the best of leaders,

when their task is accomplished

and their work is done

‘We have done it ourselves’

The people will remark

Coaching Architecture - why is it important?

I have found in my years of coaching and mentoring with various clients at all levels of seniority and experience that when setting out it is vital to agree a Coaching Architecture.  This may seem obvious, is often overlooked in the early days and is virtually impossible to go back to once the programme is underway with a client.  first things first.  Establish the ground rules and goals before becoming involved in the delivery.  Stand back from the issues before helping the client solve their problems.  This does not require a huge amount of time, nor fancy techniques but a lot of listening and self control.
